Bryan P. Range | PhD, LMFT, CCTP, CFTP
Personal Statement
My name is Bryan P. Range and I am a doctoral candidate at the University of Iowa in the Couple and Family Therapy program. As a first-generation college student admitted to Eastern Illinois University (undergraduate) through the Gateway Program (an alternative admissions program), I pride myself on being the exception to the rule and epitomize what it means to be resilient and a vigorous seeker of justice in the face of impossible odds given my traumatic and disadvantaged background. I have dedicated my career to reducing the suffering of others, particularly those who are disadvantaged and marginalized. My vigor for helping others and justice is demonstrated throughout my clinical work, research, teaching, and service which are all informed by my multicultural and social justice lens.
Multicultural and Social Justice Orientation
Due to the many challenges that I have faced, particularly as a Black male, multiculturalism and social justice is a central piece of my identity.
My multicultural and social justice statement defines what cultural competence and social justice mean to me and how these concepts are interwoven in my clinical practice, research, teaching, and service.

Teaching
Teaching
Here, I am teaching/facilitating a discussion on "The Self of the Therapist" to doctoral MFT students. You will notice how I facilitate an open and warm environment for students, assess their knowledge and understanding of the topic, appropriately challenge, offer perspectives or information that may enhance their understanding, my use of humor and how I conclude the discussion with a powerful story that consolidates information in a concise and cohesive manner.
